Untreated Jaundice

Elyria, Ohio Birth Injury Attorney

Welcoming a child into this world is a beautiful experience for parents and their entire family. From the first time an infant opens his or her eyes, to the first moment they wrap their tiny hand around your finger, your love for them multiplies.

Unfortunately, birth complications can lead to a variety health issues for your child that may last his or her entire life. Some of these issues can be caused by untreated jaundice.

According to Mayo Clinic, high levels of bilirubin that cause severe jaundice in infants can cause serious complications if left untreated by physicians or other health professionals.

If your baby has severe jaundice, there’s a risk that bilirubin may pass into the brain if not treated in a timely fashion. This causes a condition called acute bilirubin encephalopathy, with such symptoms as:

  • Listlessness or difficulty walking (infants of walking-age, of course)
  • High-pitched crying
  • Poor sucking or feeding
  • Backward arching of the neck and body
  • Fever
  • Vomiting

In some extreme examples, acute bilirubin can cause permanent brain damage, known as kernicterus. Symptoms of kernicterus include:

  • Involuntary and uncontrolled movements
  • Permanent upward gaze
  • Hearing loss
  • Improper development of tooth enamel

Your infant’s doctor should identify if jaundice is an issue. Failure to do so could harm the child for life. If jaundice is recognized early, prompt treatment may prevent significant, lasting damage.
